What Freeview boxes are recommended / people using in 2014?

Postby martinveasey » Tue May 13, 2014 3:55 pm

Hi,

As at 2014, what are the currently available (ideally in the shops!) Frevview STBs that people are using and that are compatible with AltEPG codes?

I recently bought a Goodmans GDB18. After a bit of fiddling around with learning new codes (http://www.tivoland.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=514&start=30#p17356), I got it up and running. However, the wretched STB seems to try updating its EPG listings every week or so, which causes an intrusive banner to fall across the picture - and it doesn't time out.

I've checked on the web and can't find any hacks to turn the EPG update off, so I need a new STB ...

Cheers

I'd recommend forgetting new and buying a 2nd hand Sony VTX-D800U from ebay. It is generally felt to be the best Freeview box to use with a TiVo.

Netgem
Works best if turned off once every week or so.

My Tivo also seems to be best when turned off every month

Discovered this when we had the house refurbed and the mains was continually going off.
Didn't have any issues with recorded programmes missed then, but had before.
As soon as we went back to mains on all the time back came the problems so off goes the Netgem once a week, Tivo off once a month

Hi,

I'm using a Humax HD-FOX T2 after reluctantly retiring my VTX800 to the kitchen telly...

Sounds a bit redundant I know but actually the TiVo makes a fantastic job of recording the HD channels when using Mode 0 - there's a big difference in artefacts and resolution. I've only a 26" telly but from my sofa the recordings looks as good as their HD original!

And it's more useful with the extra HD channels now on Freeview.

There's some telnetting and ftp'ing required of course - just let me know if you're interested and I'll try to tidy up what I did and find out whose scripts I modified.

I also added an IR code for the 'OK' button so as to speed up channel changes, and maybe other things I've forgotten.

Thanks for the fantastic support of the AltEPG guys and this forum - I'm a long time lurker :)

cheers
Graham

Courtesy of this 'ere forum I got myself a Sony VTXD800

Normally would not touch anything Sony with a bargepole

It is good and so fast to tune in - 60 seconds, way faster than anything else I have ever used
