DX30 - I hope you do not think I am interfering but I wonder possibly if Mazda626 has checked his ASDL filter(s).

I had a similar problem when I moved house last year. When fitting existing filters which I had brought with me when moving, I found I was unable to perform and complete a dial-up download. On purchasing and fitting authentic BT
replacements, the problem was solved.

It's certainly worth a try, although I'm unsure if Virgin are using ADSL in this case. (in my area they provide fibre broadband).

Thanks Dx30
Is there any chance I am having very bad luck
everytime i call? "Number not answering" would
make one think the number/server is very
busy. I would assume "failed to connect" was
a problem my end. I know you guys would know
better than me though.

Cheers

I doubt it is down to bad luck - there are multiple modems on that 0161 number so you would need a lot of people phoning at the same time to use them all. Maybe it would happen on the odd occasion but since you have tried many times over several days I doubt it happened every time.

Hi guys is there anyway I can get the ethernet/network connection working
again on this Tivo. The card does light up when i plug the ethernet cable into
the router but the machine will only try to connect via phonecall

Is there anyway to buy a hard drive with all the necessary drivers and settings
already configured? I remember Tivo heaven from years back but I cant
find a website anymore to try and order anything

Many thanks

I think all the UK TiVo suppliers have shutdown now. http://www.tivoland.com/ (who were behind the altepg project) closed at the end of 2015. Both tivo central and tivo heaven have also gone.

Your best chance of getting a new tivo hard drive is to download the altepg cd iso from here http://www.altepg.com/altepgiso/index.php

If you can locate a suitable PC (i.e. an ide only PC from circa 2003) you can prepare your own replacement drive.

Thanks Dx30

Do you know where I would download any necessary
drivers for the old network card? Thats my main
concern as my phoneline doesnt seem to let me
download the epg anymore since I have moved.
I do not think the network card is broken, however
In the tivo settings the machine does not offer me
the opportunity to download the schedule any way
other than via the phoneline. Any ideas?
What should the option screen look like?
Many thanks

The altepg iso cd contains drivers for the common network cards and should automatically detect them so if you can prepare a hard drive it should just work.

There is no option screen for network cards on the UK TiVo - they weren't part of the official TiVo offering but rather 3rd party add-ons so no support in the UI. If you can telnet to the TiVo you can run nic_config_tivo to configure things like the IP address and whether to use the network for daily calls. I order to telnet however you need to know the IP address of the TiVo network card (always assuming the correct network drivers are installed). You could try "telnet 192.168.1.200" as this address is commonly used and you might get lucky, it all depends on how the original owner set things up.

Alternatively you could put the TiVo drive in a PC running linux and try and configure things that way but to be honest if you have to do that you might as well go the altepg iso cd route.

Have you tried plugging just the TiVo into the phone line? From the phone not ringing, I would suspect the REN (Ringer Equivalence Number) is being exceeded. Basically every bit of stuff you plug into a phone line has a REN value. IIRC BT lines had a REN of 4 and could take quite a bit of extra kit before you hit problems. Quite how Virgin ones are configured, I don't know.

Hope that helps,
Tony.

Hi Tony,
I have only ever had one
device plugger into the phoneline socket
at one time. When trying the tivo it had
Only been the tivo connected at the time.
The phone eventually came round and does
ring now but my tivo keeps giving me the same
message "number not answering" when i
attempt to make thw tivo call for the EPG.
I am lost without full tivo functionality and
my old desktop just gave up the fight about 2
months ago , so I cant even attempt modifying
my tivo myself.

There is a network card in the tivo, which illuminates
when an ethernet cable is attached. However
this is all it seems to do. I cant figure out how
to use this function.
Many thanks

What happens when you dial the Tivo service number from the phone? Can you hear the modem negotiation? Does it terminate at the same time through the call every time?

Yeah it stops early into the call. Also
fails test call , as if the phone number
is unavailable. I have always used this
number with little trouble over the past
few years. I cannot understand why it is
failing.many thanks

Hi,

Have you taken the lid of Tivo, and checked whether the network card is the same as the one shown in the 'Steveconrad' link posted earlier in this thread?

Wondering whether I am able to write and test a new drive for you. What is your router's Gateway address?
