No sound on Sky or TiVo recordings

No sound on Sky or TiVo recordings

Postby The maverick » Wed Mar 01, 2017 4:17 pm

I am getting no sound on live Sky TV and TiVo recordings. I have looked at TiVo and sky sound settings and cant see anything wrong (though in sky sound settings the volume box is grey rather than saying anything specific). Any help appreciated.

Check the scart leads first, if they are OK then try a reboot, if that doesn't work then read these for ideas

Another reboot and the sound was back on live Sky. Tried recording and back to just a black bar. Another reboot and its recorded fine with sound. What's happening?

Sounds like might be best to dig out one of my two spare tivos in the garage and fit HD (1Tb) and network card on one of them.

Or you could try swap the power supply from one of your spares into your no.1 TiVo? (The 'no sound' problem is usually a PSU issue than a problem on the mobo)

I could TRY I've swapped hard drives and network cards (on PCs) but not power supplies. Is it straightforward?

Yes it's just a few screws. Just make sure to switch mains power off at least 10 minutes before you go near the power supply, and don't touch the big capacitor (big round cylinder thing!).

I find fitting the network card on the edge of the mobo can be a pain (and often requires temporarily releasing the mobo from the case to gain a bit more wiggle room)

But if you're happier to swap HD+net card then you can of course just do that.

So the latest situation is black bar with recordings and all old recordings that did have full functionality now are video with no sound. Does this still tie in with the PSU fauly?

What did you change?

Do you have TivoWeb? Check the kernel log for a line like
Jan 1 00:03:13 (none) kernel: Msp: *** Unknown MSP product!!! ***0x0

Try removing the RAM from the cachecard (but leave the card installed) and see what effect that has.

Have discovered that older recording DO have audio.

Only changes I have made are the reboots.

You are getting a bit advanced for me I wouldn't know what the cachecard or ram looked like.

Ok, I thought you were going to try swapping bits over with one of your spare TiVos.

I have 2 tivos opened up on my kitchen table. The spare one from the garage has so much muck in it you could plant potatoes! I can't see how the PSU comes out it seems to be wired in with the other end wired in the mobo.
