Disk capacity is usually nearly the same as hours at basic on system information: if it says 500 hours at basic, 500GB drive.

Can you have more than one command in an alias? The scripts allow for the echo confirmation to remind you what you've done. I will often only run "rw" just before editing rc.systinit.author in joe. When I exit joe, I go back to the bash screen with that text, which reminds me I need to make it ro again :)

that's how my preconfigured drives have always been setup (and the way Install hack does it).

True but I have other scripts in there apart from just those 2 ;)

Plus as mrtickle says you do get a nice fluffy message rather than just silently being dumped back at the bash prompt.

pemills wrote:Thanks guy's that certainly worked, if I use the Alias command does that get written somewhere to be used again or do I have to send the same command again if I need to set the disk to read/write or read only?

It's only kept for the duration of the current login unless you put it in a .bash_profile file as I said above.

pemills wrote:and do I need to set the drive to read only when finished, what the downside if I don't?

There's a small risk that something could happen on closedown that trashes the root directory and makes your Tivo unusable.

pemills wrote:One further question is how can you determine the size of a disk installed without opening up the case and physically checking what is written on the disk

Code: Select all
hdparm -g /dev/hda

Will tell you the number of sectors, take this and divide by 2048 will give you the formatted disc size in MB.

(Or "hdparm -i /dev/hda" will tell you the disc model number ;) )

That's a great way of checking the disk size, thanks, such a lot to learn!! I must start making a note of all these commands :wink:

Tinkering with TiVo's since 2000, now have 8 lifetime sub S1 TiVo's in various states of upgrade/hacked condition & 4 non-lifetime sub TiVo's, too boring to list all the details but most have upgraded HD's & network cards

The Info+ module for Tivoweb (1.9.4) contains a dump of hdparm output too. Not sure how ubiquitous it is, but I've had it for ages.
Code: Select all
File System/Disc Information
Mounted File Systems:
/dev/hda4 on / type ext2 (ro)
/dev/hda9 on /var type ext2 (rw)
/proc on /proc type proc (rw)
Filesystem    Type    Size  Used  Avail  Capacity Mounted on
/dev/hda4     ext2    124M   44M    74M     37%   /
/dev/hda9     ext2    124M   30M    88M     25%   /var
/dev/hda:
 multcount    =  0 (off)
 I/O support  =  0 (default 16-bit)
 unmaskirq    =  0 (off)
 using_dma    =  1 (on)
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 nowerr       =  0 (off)
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    =  8 (on)
 geometry     = 16383/16/63, sectors = 488397168, start = 0
